04.23.2019, RADFORD, VA – Thomson Industries, Inc., a leading manufacturer of mechanical motion control solutions, has received ISO 14001 certification, which demonstrates that its Tijuana, Mexico facility is operating in accordance with best environmental management practices. ISO 14001 is a family of environmental management standards advanced by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to guide businesses in systematizing and improving their environmental management efforts.
“Everything we do here impacts the community and the environment, especially in energy consumption, water usage and hazardous waste generation,” said Fernando Reales, Manager of the Tijuana plant. “By paying close attention to our operations in these areas, we can improve our overall operations, reduce costs and take care of the planet at the same time.”
ISO 14001 is a voluntary standard that sets out criteria for implementing an effective environmental management system. Following its comprehensive recommendations helps assure company management, employees, customers and other stakeholders that the organization is compliant with relevant federal, state and local regulations, and is continuously measuring and improving its relationship with the local and global environment.
“The certification process at the Thomson Tijuana plant involved analyzing internal procedures against the ISO standard, identifying the gaps between current procedures and the ISO requirements, and implementing specific actions to close the gaps,” said Raxa Romero, Thomson’s Environmental Health and Safety Leader. “It also included extensive training and involvement of plant personnel.”
The Tijuana plant pursued the ISO 14001 certification as part of a Thomson global sustainability initiative. Thomson’s Marengo, Illinois facility, its largest manufacturing operation in the U.S., received ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certification in 2017, and its Kristianstad, Sweden plant was certified in 2015. Plans are now underway for certification of plants in Fremont, California, and Wolfschlugen, Germany.
